Newbie - C-media onboard sound

I'm a newbie to Linux and was pretty impressed that when I installed SuSE 9.2 it installed most of my devices. I have one problem though.

When I installed Linux it installed drivers for CMI8738 C-media sound card which I have built-in to my Asus motherboard. However the driver only makes 2 of the speakers work and not the 5.1 surround sound or the microphone work. I downloaded some linux drivers on their website and I was wondering if anyone could help me compile it (as I have no idea how) or to find another driver as I'm not sure this driver is going to be better than the one already present. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you have a .tar.gz file? Which driver do you use, ALSA, OSS or something else?

The driver from the vendor may be better suited than some more generic driver. Where is the problem in compiling it?

Well two things:-

a) I'm not 100% sure how you compile it.
b) Whenever I try to extract the tar.gz file it says it's corrupt although I can view what's inside of it using Konqueror.

The file is an official file but it's about 2/3 years old.
