Newbie ans Suse problems - again!
 

Hi All,
First of all my thanks to fatgod and Phonics3k for their help.
Suse 8.0 is really giving me problems. I installed,set up my modem and printer, but not my scanner. (More later). Then I did the on-line update (> 14MB). Then I set up my desktops to my liking, and my e-mail accounts. The next day I booted, and it was back into a virgin Suse! Same dull Suse backgrounds, my user name forgotten (but not the root password),with kppp the modem wouldn't dial out, (Sorry, can't create modem lock file), and kinternet said I wasn't part of the group, etc, etc.
Reformatted and re-installed Suse, set up the modem and updated again on line. Now the display will not fill the monitor screen, (yes, I've tried other resolutions, no difference), the desk tops won't customize, so I'm stuck with the awful Suse background, and then the final blow!!!!!
Rebooted the same evening, and after the normal Suse boot menu, and the usual log screens as far as the final two lines:
Master Resource Control: Run level 5 has been reached
Skipped services in run level 5 Splash
Linux log-in prompt: Text mode only.
I can't rescue from the floppy "Can't find initrd - reboot"
How can I get to the GUI from the text prompt? Has anybody else had similar problems?
I think that Suse may be heading for the waste bin soon, at least Mandrake has never screwed me up to this extent, but I don't want to lose 2 hours of update time unneccessarily.
The scanner problem is because it is sharing a two port usb hub with my printer. the printer set up automatically, but the scanner would only set up after I unplugged the printer. I still don't know if they will both work if I ever get back into the OS!

Why don't you try and boot into runlevel 1 and see if that works.
If it does, then boot into runlevel 3, and run "X" with "startx".

i'll post a better response later while i figure out the problem, but just to save you time and pain, you should never reformat and re-install linux just because something doesn't work. it is usually a config. problem. i apologize if sound rude, but i have found that reformat/reinstall does nothing but waste time and cause pain. i just simply want to pass on some information to a fellow linux user. i'll post again later after i come up with an explaination(sp?) to your problem. until then; later.

I just have a quick comment on this particular problem.
1) Modem - Can't really say much there. I use DSL and haven't ever had a problem with any Linux distro.
2) Desktop - There have been a few tech note releases about a giltch in SuSE that doesn't store settings on the desktop. However, If my memory serves me correctly, this was ONLY in regards to logging in as ROOT. I believe there is a fix out there for it. But why would you really want to log in as root to a desktop?
3) Re-installin - I agree that re-installing only wastes time. It sounds as if (and please forgive me if I'm wrong) you want SuSE to dump itself on the putr and just fly away. In a theory, yes. Did your Red Hat distro ever do that on the first stamp?
My SuSE is running perfectly fine on 7 different boxes of all different mixes.
Don't dump SuSE just becuase it wont load as pretty and easy as RH or a Microsloth Wintendo.
