You're asking for a lot but I think the best thing for you do do is really READ the hell out of the FAQ and manual that comes with mplayer.

I know that doesn't help but believe me when I say all you need is in there somewhere. It's just scattered around in places here and there.

Also do searches in Google for people with your computer/distro and mplayer. It will help. Just don't ask the mplayer people because you will get yelled at.

mplayer might not be the best program to cut your teeth on. You might try something a little easier.

Yeah, mplayer is kind of hard to install, at least with RPM it is. Lots of dependency crap. Read some manuals about RPM and learn how to install other, simpler stuff (perhaps using rpmdrake or gnorpm or any other rpm interface that comes with Mandrake) before getting into the stuff that doesn't come with your distribution, such as mplayer.

If all you need is a CD player program, mplayer is kind of overkill. It's more of a video/mpeg/quicktime viewer. Try using XMMS for playing CDs, or check out your Mandrake distribution CDs for CD-playing applications (some might already be installed by default - check around in your menu under Multimedia).

i agree with starting with xmms, ive benn compiling mplayer for a week with no luck, i can compile it and use make install to install it but i cant find the finished executable file to run the program, so ya if you just want cd audio xmms will be great, start with easier try to upgrade mozilla or netscape to new version, that was a task for me as a newbie!!anyone reading this that knows where my mplayer executable installs to please tell me. i dont know if its even compiled right

I compiled and installed Mplayer from the source and it worked perfectly. I used the 0.90 beta version.

If you only want to play music, it might be best to just use Xmms which should have come with MDK 9.0 as the others have suggested.

Try typing mplayer <options> <filename>. That is how you would run a particular file with mplayer. Its really not that hard.
