Newb Linux Compiler Help

Hello All,

I've done a search for this particular problem, have tried to understand what they mean, but to no avail.

I'm completely brand new to Linux, just trying to install my NVidia drivers. To do this, I need the linker in the binutils. To install the binutils, I need the gcc compiler. To install the gcc compiler I need to set CC to a working compiler, so says bash. I've tried numerous things to install the compiler, or to set the PATH to a working compiler. I've tried CC=gcc but it doesn't do anygood. I've tried even setting CC=/usr/local/src/gcc-3.3.3 but when I try to run the compiler config, it says that that statement in the PATH is a directory, and not a working compiler.

I'm using Red Hat 8.0 installed via CD Images downloaded from ftp.redhat.com

What am I doing wrong? Is there a default compiler that is needed to compile the gcc that I need to set the CC= statment to? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Your going to need to install the gcc package for Redhat 8.0 (my guess is it would be found on the CD). That will automatically setup everything you need it to as far as environmental variables.

"/usr/local/src/gcc-3.3.3" is the directory containing the source code for gcc and it is not an executable program.

Rule of thumb:

When installing a distro, make sure you install ALL of the libraries and development tools! I learned this one the hard way. Even if you don't think you'll ever need them.

I've never used redhat, but I'm pretty sure its as simple as installing all related rpms to your machine.

Anyways, the nvidia drivers are easy as pi to install..but you might need to mess with your /etc/X11/X86config to get 3d acceleration.

Thanks for the replies, found the gcc options under developmental tools in packages. None had been installed

Once the gcc installed properly, the binutils ran fine, and vid drivers followed, thanks for the help
