New user-emacs

I just started making simple java programs within the last couple months and I wanted to get emacs on my computer with ubuntu 5.10. I'm not real experienced with linux and I've tried a few ways to get emacs on here, but I can't get it working. Can anybody give me a way so I can get emacs installed and usable? Thanks for any help.

It might help if you tell us what went wrong with the few ways your tried. But I think the simplest way would be

apt-get install emacs21

When I try apt-get install emacs21 I get the message:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
What can I do about that?

login as root, type su then root password and then apt-get install emacs21 again

On Ubuntu you use sudo by default, so it'd be "sudo apt-get install emacs21".
