I am no linux guru either, in fact I am really new, well not new, I'm just another newbie as far as knowlege goes though. With that said, when it asks you from what location you want to install from are you answering "Network"? If that is the case, I think you would do an anonymous login. If not I am clueless too. I would recomend downloading the DVD or the complete CD set, just to make it easy.

If you mean during install it is asking for a login & password, then you should make one up eg warren, warrenspassword. It is important to remember these as you will need them to login when the install has finished. If you are using mandriva, it is likely that you will also be asked for a "root password". Again, make one up. Write it down or remember it, you will need it later.

If you mean during boot it is asking for a login & password, then you should supply the ones you gave during the install (eg warren, warrenspassword).

During bootup of the live CD? Or did you already install?

Sometimes, lived CDs will ask for username, but will not require a password. Try typing "root" for username and see what it does.
