New to Linux, Please Help!!!

Hi all,

I'm new to Linux and i have my friends extremely old computer...a gateway that is about 3 feet tall...i wanted to put linux on it just to learn and see how linux runs and i have a cd with DSL (damn small linux) on it however when i put the cd in the drive and boot the computer w/ cd rom booting first, i get the prompt..."insert bootable media in the appropriate drive"...im guessing it is to old to read burnt cds so i wanted your advice...are there any Linux setups i can put on a floppy? or any other solutions?

thanks alot,
Nick

It probably reads self-burnt CDs just fine, but does not support booting from CD. You'll need a bootable floppy for that.

Are you sure you burned DSL as an ISO image?

If you use Nero, see: http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/neroburning.html

Probably CD Drive is not compatible the with the speed its written. So try buring the CD with lowest RPMs like 12 or 24x. As i have faced problems with booting the old machines, with CDs written in 52x speed..
