New to Linux, Help Please

Hello everyone. This is my first time getting linux! I am really excited. I downloaded all 3 of the Fedora Core 1 files, and put them on 3 different CD's. Now, I am wondering how to actually install it on my system as a dual boot. (so that I can keep my old windows os just incase). When I put the CD1 into my drive, and go to D:\, it has a bunch of different folders and files. But I do not see any "main" setup file. Can someone please guide me through the installation process? Thanks a LOT!

You'll need to boot from those disks. You can't install FC while in Windows.

Most operating systems don't work that way.

you need to boot to the cd. just reboot your system with cd1 in the drive and go nuts. you might need to set your bios boot preferences to allow cd rom's to boot before the harddrives first.

and please use a better thread title next time. what was wrong with "not sure how to start fedora installation" for example?

Thanks for all of your help! And sorry about the topic name. I'm new to these forums, but don't worry, I will improve =). Thanks again! I'm going to go try it after I finish my sandwich!

CD 1 is bootable - in the same way that a Windows cd is. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=121 should be of help when setting up a dual boot system.

Welcome to LQ

One more thing. I have it on 3 different disks. So I am guessing that I boot up my computer the first time with the 1st cd in the drive, then will the installation ask me for the next disk and so on? Or will this be a problem?

No, the insatll routine will prompt you for the relevant disk(s)

Ok everyone. I just started my installation of Fedora, but I ran into a slight problem. When I get to the part about partitioning so that I can install Linux I get errors. Here's what happened:

I selected Automatically Partition, then I told it to keep all current partitions and install on free space. But when I press next it says that there was an error of some sort.

Can someone help me? Then I tried going through DiskDruid to create a second partition to install linux on. I selected it as a "/" type and used the "Fixed Size" option but it said that it couldn't create it. Can someone please help me figure this out? Thanks again.

"Some sort of error" is hardly insightful... please tell us the real error.

maybe you have not left any space unpartitioned on the drive?

I don't rememeber the "exact" error message BUT. What you just said... About no unpartitoined space... Right now I am on Win XP and it is taking up the full disk. I want to install Linux onto this computer but I'm not sure how to partition this disk to make room for Linux! I'm sure that this is the problem. Can someone tell me what to do, in order to make room on this disk for Linux? I am using NTFS file system. Thanks.

bumping after 19 minutes? oh come on. have some respect.... our rules ask you not to bump for *at least* 24 hours. maybe instead of just bumping this thread you could have gone to google and tried "ntfs resize linux partition" or something...
