new to linux and latex. lyx versus textlive

Hello
this is my first post so i hope i did it in the right place.

i am new to linux and latex. i use ubutu and i need to install latex to write my dissertation. i have templates from the university but i am not sure what is best to install. i have two options: textlive and lyx. i was reading and both of them seem to be good options. any ideas about what would be better?
thank you
fernando

As I understand it lyx provides a (some claim) more user friendly, AWYSIWYG front end to latex. Normally with latex you just use any text editor you like on .tex files and then run latex (or pdflatex) on the file to produce the typeset document. texlive is simply an implementation or packaging of latex. If you are not a programmer you may find it easier to use lyx, if you have any (even only a tiny amount) or programing experience you will probably be happier writing latex documents directly in your favorite editor.

I would recommend Kile over Lyx though. Lyx templates have there own code but Kile only uses tex.

Good point. I'd forgotten that lyx was not 100% latex.

Just to clarify, kile is latex, not just tex?
