Are you using a USB keyboard? If you are the kernel may not be detecting it. You need a PS/2 keyboard to plug in until your past that stage and then can set up USB keyboard support. The login should be "root" and there should be no password until you set it.

Wait - are you saying that you actually can't type? If that's the case, then you should use a PS/2 keyboard (or, in your computer's BIOS, there's an option for it to make USB devices work with non-USB-compatible OS's - try this if you don't have a PS/2 keyboard). If you mean that Linux doesn't show stars or anything when you type your password, this is normal - it's for heightened security. There's a way to disable this feature, but I don't know what it is and you'll have to log in to do it. Just type your username, press "Enter", type your password, press "Enter" and you're in.

I recently had this problem. Go into the BIOS and turn off the
USB. Worked for me.

p.s. a PS/2 mouse wll also work and is a possible temporary
solution until you get the USB fixed.

How would a PS/2 mouse help you if you can't even log in?
