Question New to Apache from IIS

First, is there a website for noobies like me?

Also... this is going to sound stupid...

Where do I find the website public files, like index.htm and such? I looked in htdocs but they're all strange like index.html.de and such... can't find just a regular index file so I know where to begin. Help anyone?

Ok... found it. But now, how do I make index.htm or index.php or index.asp the default in this order:

index.asp
index.php
index.htm

Yes, I'm going to install php and asp later... once I figure this part out.
