Unhappy new linux user trbl opening downloaded programs

I am a new linux user and I have a couple of questions. What is a rar archive and how do you open it? Also, would someone please give me instructions on how to set up WINE and Kazaalite on my computer? I will be very happy if I get these problems solved. Thanks for any advice.

rar is something like zip and ace. if you use Gnome, you should be able to open it with file-roler.

can't help you with WINE though, sorry !
