New laptop, new headaches- console messed up when coming out of X

I just got a new Presario R3000...

When I start Slack, my console comes up in 1024x768x32 just fine and I'm a happy-camper until I start X... When I come out of X, my screen is trashed and rolls. 'X -probeonly" causes this also.

'clear' and/or ALT-F2 will not clear this up.

Someone told me that I should use a text frame buffer to fix this but, I don't know how.

Slack 9.1
console STARTS UP in 1024x768x32 mode and works fine
Win Mgr= KDE

Anyone have an easy to follow answer?
