Question New display won't work above 256 colors

When I originally installed RH 9, I used a 21" Gateway display from my home PC (on a switch box) without a problem. Once I moved the machine downstairs without the monitor, my intent was to access the system via X.

Now I have connected a refurbished Dell E772C 17" monitor onto the system and am having major problems getting the display to work properly.

What I have been able to narrow down is that I can use the RH 9 Dell Monitor from the display configuration, but ONLY at 256 colors. Anytime, I go to "Thousands of Colors" or "Millions", the display goes black. I have tried multiple different settings including generic, 800x600, 1024x768, default refresh rates for the monitor, low refresh rates, etc. but it only seems to happen when using more than 256 colors.

Can anyone help me resolve this? I would hate to think that 256 colors is the max on this system. BTW: The video board is an ATI Radeon 32MB

welcome to by the way

As far as I know the DELL E772C is one of the available monitors that should be working fine or at least detected by RH 9.0.

If you're telling me that a generic setup wouldn't work for anything besides 256 colors I would do the following.

If you know someone that has RH 9, I'd go to his system with your monitor and test it there...see what comes out...if it works on his system, you might either wait for other forum users to reply to your post, or just simply reinstall the whole things if you can't wait to use X windows

You might even wanna try it on a windows system *cough*, just to see if you can retrieve more than 256 colors off that old monitor.

Hope that helps!

Are you sure you've changed the monitor type to 'Dell E772C' in the monitor config screen? If the system still thinks that a 21" Gateway screen is connected, then you could get the sort of problems you're experiencing.

If you can't select the 'Dell E772C' specifically, then select a 'generic' type and make sure the horizontal and vertical refresh rates at the bottom of the selection box are set to 30-70 KHz and 50-160 Hz respectively. These are the refresh rates set out in Dell's specifications here:

New display won't work above 256 colors

Thanks for the replies - What I finally found out after MANY reboots (since I couldn't see the screen) is that I needed to turn off the "enable 3d hardware acceleration" It was turned on with the Gateway monitor which is an older monitor, so I don't know how/why that was the "solution".

Why that caused a problem with the monitor is beyond me, but if it works....
