New Acer notebook with linpus linux won't boot!!!
I just got an Acer notebook for a friend who doesn't speak any english. We got this notebook with linpus linux in portuguese installed on it (I'm guessing this is not an issue) but the OS won't install. After turning it on, it runs a few system checks and gets stuck giving me a command line that says:
[root@localhost /]# What do I do? How do I make it install the OS? Thanks in advance for the help. I've never in my life used linux and this was the only machine we found with an OS in portuguese which is why we got it. I'm also brand new to this forum. Hopefully someone has had a similar experience or knows how to deal with this issue. Thanks again. |
The OS is installed. Linpus boots to a command line. The '[root@localhost /]#' basically says you are logged in as root. This is pretty much all Linpus does.
If you want something useful, install a full OS like Fedora or Ubuntu. |
Than you very much for the reply. But if the OS is installed, how do I make it run? What kind of command do I need to input to make it start?
|
It is running and it is started. What you are seeing is Linux operating in command-line mode. The version of Linpus that Acer distributes is very minimal. Unless you are familiar with the Linux command line, it will be of little use to you.
For a list of commands that you can try, you can refer to an online reference. |
Macemoneta, you're incredibly kind. Thank you very much. I'm going through the Ubuntu website right now. What if I install that? Is it available in portuguese? Will I have a problem with the drivers for this machine? The interface looks really friendly and it seems like a great alternative, but like I mentioned before, this machine is not mine, it's for a friend who speaks only portuguese and barely knows anything about computers (and that's an overstatement!). Ubuntu's interface seems really neat, and for what I see on the pictures posted on the website, it can be used in different languages. Do you know if portuguese is one of them? The website only gives me one option for downloading an iso image. Will that CD have all the languages available? I'm so sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but maybe you know the answers, so here goes hoping.
Thanks again for all your kind help. PS: The iso image will be for a bootable Ubuntu CD, right? Should I just completely format this partition and forget that linpus even existed? |
For help on installing on a given machine check Linux on Laptops. Look at the list of Acer machines to try to find your model or a similar model for any issues and tips.
