Netzero on Debian
 

Hi, i have a netzero platinum account, and i have regular Debian linux. I have an external modem that will dial out, but not actually connect, to the internet. I've tried using the .deb package for debain with no success. I've heard that there are ways of getting around netzero's software, but i'm not sure how. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I may be out of date on this, but I think you just run netzero with "wine" under Linux.

Do you mean that you want to use them as your ISP using "regular" software? I.E. Konqueror, Firefox, Opera, etc.
If so, you are going to need the information to do a manual set up:[list=1][*]Your user name.[*]Your password.[*]Their local phone number.[*]Their incoming mail server.[*]Their outgoing mail server.[*](optional) Their DNS server(s).[/list=1] Now, you probably already have 1-3, the question is can you get the rest of the info from them. That is if you're willing to pay $1.95 / min. for tech support.

Their incoming POP mail server -- pop.netzero.net
Their outgoing mail server. -- smtp.netzero.net

If you need IMAP access, I would try -- mail.netzero.net (just a guess).
imap.netzero.net is nonexistant
http://webmail.netzero.net/ works!


After messing w/ their web site & toll free #, I wonder how wedded you are to their "service". If you are interested in exploring another $10/mo. ISP, tell me your area & exchange & I'll find out if HALNet has lines in your area.

I have been considering new service, and i'd be appreciative of any suggestions you have. I live in Random Lake, WI and the area code is 920.

Try highstream.net... they're cheap and Linux-friendly.

HAL-PC is a Houston TX user group. The help desk is staffed by real computer people, whose native language is English, or the Texas version of it at least. EDIT: Many of them use Linux themselves, & all are supposed to know where to refer Linux questions: HLUG. The back room is BSD & OS/2 types. </EDIT>

Dont waste your time on netzero, ive wasted quite enough of mine.

If you cant get thier software to work on your system, then using their service will be illegal, unstable, and probally disconnect you soon, if you can even connect in the first place.

Being a spoiled long time broadband user, I havent really tested any dial up isps latley, but the first one I plan on trying when I get around to it is http://650dialup.com/. It looks like it should work quite well with my linux laptop, if i can get the crappy winmodem working :)
