network traffic speedometer?

is there anything what will show my current up- and download speed?

Helper_Monkey 02-17-2003 02:07 PM

Go to freshmeat.net, do a search for 'network traffic.' You should find a bunch of programs will do the trick.

MasterC 02-17-2003 02:49 PM

www.gkrellm.net does that, and it seems to have options for all type of network connections.

Cool

Yep, try gKrellm. It's ugly at first but you can find good themes for it :)

Knetload is also very nice, sits on the Kicker, and can have a floating numerical display, too.

keevitaja 02-18-2003 11:19 AM

i have some questions about this gkrellm.
first it displays the sum of the traffics(up- and downstreams). is it possible to make it show both up and down?
secondly i would like to see the temperature of my cpy... there is a plugin, but i couldnt installl it.
and there is this mail notification. is a .mp3 file just enaugh, or do i have to have a program for playing it.

MasterC 02-18-2003 11:46 AM

2 out of 3:

1. Yes, it can be configured to show both up and down, not combined (how helpful is combined?) I've got mine setup to show both up and down seperately try different character strings, here's the one I use: \C\f $M\D1$a\f $l\D2$A\f $L (Note: I don't know what all that means, I just know it's what I use and like ;) )

2. Temp of your city. I use that one too. What is stopping you from installing it? If it's because you don't have the directory it's looking for, create it. However, I prefer to use my plugins on a per-user basis, so I stick them in ~/.gkrellm/plugins

As for a program to play mp3's my ventured guess is that you'd need a program, however I'd also venture a guess that mpg123 is good enough since it's sort of THE mp3 program in linux...

Cool

what city? i want to see my CPU temp.

MasterC 02-18-2003 12:08 PM

Oh, I thought you said cpy, and mis-spelled city :D

There's a bit involved in installing the plugins for cpu temp monitoring, you'll need to look at this page:
http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/
And possible recompile your kernel. :)

Cool

oh. sorry. didn't see my own mistake. i don't have this mpg123. so i dicided to use xmms but there is one problem. everytime there is a new email for me, xmms will pop up. i don't like it. is there a way to tell xmms not to pop up. key or something? or another option is allso welcome.

MasterC 02-18-2003 12:18 PM

Um, try using mpg123 ;) You probably do have it, if not, go ahead and install from your CD's or get it from a RH mirror. It's a command line mp3 player. That way you don't have xmms popping up to play your mp3, it's played in the background via the console.

Cool

keevitaja 02-18-2003 12:36 PM

are you sure? there is no mpg123 for RH 8. though i found mpg321 for 7.3
it made 2 new commands: mpg123 and mpg321 ... anyway thanks again

MasterC 02-18-2003 01:04 PM

If you don't have it, go ahead and get it:
http://www.mpg123.de/

Cool

keevitaja 02-18-2003 01:12 PM

i installed RH 7.3 version of mpg123. it works.

MasterC 02-18-2003 01:20 PM

Sweet :) And it works with your plugin?

Cool
