needed help for EMACS

I've recently switched from VI to EMACS. Whenever I edit a file, say, file.txt, a file name "file.txt~'" being created. How do I avoid that for emacs? Also, any guides for editing .emacs would be welcome...let me tell you, I'm not a Lisp programmer, so, I'm looking for some easy to use tutorials.

The best comprehensive plain-English guide I've found to Emacs other than the built-in tutorial can be found at the following URL:

Now. If you're ABSOLUTELY sure you don't want to make backups (i.e., no oops-recovery), follow these instructions. In xemacs (the GUI version of Emacs), you can disable backups by going to { Options -> Advanced (Customize) -> Emacs -> Files -> Backup -> [#] Make Backup Files... } and un-selecting that.

In the text-based emacs, I'm ashamed to say, I haven't used that except remotely in so long, and thus haven't had to bug the configuration, I can't remember how to change that option.

Still, HTH!
