Needed AVI to VCD or MPG converter

I've tried to install avidemux. But it says it needs Spidermonkey (installed already) but it cannot find it. So rather than play games......

What other programs can I use? I have a mess of avi files I need to convert to mpegs so I can burn as VCD.

Any ideas?

Running Slack 10.2, kernel 2.4.31

you will get the converter with mplayer or use Konverter(frontend to mplayer engine)
