Need to find advanced router software
 

I am looking to replace my d-link router with a linux router.
I need it do do everything my current router does (except I don't want it to lock up every day)

Below are a few things I am looking for in a router. Please let me know what would be best for what I am looking for.
(I currently have Red Hat. I have played with it some but do not know too much about linux yet)

Easy to use interface
Port forwarding
Router log (ability to filter activity by ip)
Content filtering by keyword
Send email when keyword violations happen
Domain filtering
Ability to set time of day internet can be used
Remote access (to configure router)

Even if you do not know a program that will do all of these, if you know one that can do some I would still appreciate hearing about it.

All in your list can be done with a decent Linux installation. Most probably your router is also a running Linux (I also have a Linux based D-Link) router.

However it might be difficult to find a bundles solution for the requirement. There are software vendors who sell Linux based solutions for such scenarios. Even I'd be happy to provide you such a solution if you pay me :) Just kidding.

Try with the following software. They can go the distance, but you'll have to configure them. If are not seriously into this I'd suggest you to buy a packaged Linux based solution

IPTables
Squid/SquidGuard
A few supplementary packages for the above to application
(Eg: Webmin modules, or appropriate things)
May be a custom developed web application :)

"replace my d-link router with a linux router" implies to me that you want the Linux router to be a separate box that covers your whole LAN & provides NAT'ing to share an internet connection, along w/ those other features you mentioned.

I think the best place to start is w/ a "boat anchor" & install 1 of the specialty, dedicated, FW distros on it. I currently use SmoothWall Express 2.0, I am considering IPCop. I have heard M0n0wall is good, but I am leery of the BSD CLI.

You need to check which of your needs can be met by squid, which is commonly included; & which might need something like Dan's Guardian for the key word filtering, which you would probably have to add. I made a decision to not modify my "Smoothie" by trying to add stuff like Dan's to it, but there is a group of hackers on their site that make it sound easy.

btw, FYI, masquerade is more or less another word for NAT
