Need to decrease a folder and create a new partition from the partition itself....

Hello Experts...

May I ask if it is okay to erase all data at /tmp folders. The folder is assigned on partition sda7 and it allocates 60% of the total capacity w/c is 114G. Now, I want to revert this folder to 5GB and create a new partition sda8 for NTFS or Fat32 file share. Is this possible? If it is true, how and What can you recommend?

assume resize partition 7 and create a new partition 8 with the free space.

of course you should have backups but you can resize a partition when its not LIVE using any good live cd such as knoppix or Recovery is Possible and a partition tool graphical such as qtparted...or non-graphical such as linux...fdisk cfdisk sfdisk etc.

2) generally speaking it is safe for Linux to create the partition but let Ms format it to the new style eg fat.

3) do not do it to a working hard drive as some files reference to temp dir.

4) file share using ntfs is still iffy so prefer fat.
