need tips to speed up browsing

ok on my windows side of the house i messed around with the mtu and various settings (dns caching) and managed to get my adsl humming rather nicely. with linux i feel i am stuck in low gear here.

downloading files is quite quick, quite faster than in windows actually. but web browsing... ive tried all the standard browsers and phoenix. phoenix seems to be the fastest so far. back in my dial up days with rh7.3 i installed galeon and it was the fastest browser i had but now with the new mandrake galeon is running slow. i dont remember what version i had of galeon before what can i do to speed up my stuff? im just seeing slow load times on pages in general. i dont know why, with dial up when i was using rh7.3 windows was slow in comparison but now i can browse noticeably faster in windows. so something must be wrong because that aint right.

I'm not much with net stuff, but "opera" makes me post by reflex. Have you tried compiling Phoenix from source, optimized for your computer? Editing various files to perform similar adjustments for Linux like you did Windows? Editing your Phoenix prefs to block unecessary images and whatnot? Optimizing the system in general so that there are plenty of resources left for browsing?

Like I say, I'm a net idiot, but there's something, anyway.

C'mon, Mozilla/Phoenix people - help this guy optimize his surfing.
