need some details for wine configuration please

sorry to bother everyone with mundain questions, but im trying to figure this out and still getting used to the *nix CLI and getting things done. far to much GUI time in M$ for me.

Quote:
To do that, create the following directories in your home directory:

.wine/
.wine/c_drive
.wine/c_drive/Windows
.wine/c_drive/Windows/Fonts
.wine/c_drive/Windows/Start Menu/Programs
.wine/c_drive/Windows/System
.wine/c_drive/Windows/System32
.wine/c_drive/Windows/Temp
.wine/c_drive/Program Files
.wine/c_drive/Program Files/Common Files

After this copy the following files from wine-YYYYMMDD/documentation/samples to $HOME/.wine/Windows:
system.ini
win.ini

All applications will be installed on this fake Windows drive. Referred to C: inside of Windows applications.

Wine also needs a configuration file. Copy the file config from wine-YYYYMMDD/documentation/samples to $HOME/.wine.
yes trying to get wine up 100% so i can try to get winamp running, please no comments on xmms as it is not working for me for what ever god forsaken reason, wine is installed and working as i was able to get notepad running and it looked great, well as great as notepad can look.

im running RH9, and just installed wine-20040408-1rh9winehq.i686.rpm from the winehq web page. was a smooth install for me as most of the rpms have been ive played with.

my goal is to A. learn what im doing for both the how and why so i can repeat it in the future on my own. B. see if i can get winamp up and running on my RH9 system.

1st off do i need to make those directories if notepad worked? i also noted that on the FAQ page regarding wine it points to /var/lib/wine yet on my system its installed to /usr/lib/wine, is that a problem, or just something i need to be aware of?

2nd once i download winamp, were do i save it to? .wine/ is not a directory i can see in my /home/USER tree. i tried mkdir .wine/ and got no error, but still even with ls -l could not see the .wine dir.

if i have to make those directories, how do i go about doing so as user and not root?

if i can not see them with the ' . ' how do i access them?

more questions to come regarding this subject.

thank you all for the education.

To see the .wine folder, turn on "Show hidden files" in your file manager (in Nautilus, Edit=>Preferences, then check the checkbox; in Konqueror, I think it's in the top-level Edit menu, or possibly the View menu, but it's in one of the top-level menus). There's also a way to show hidden files and folders using ls, but offhand I don't remember it-- but that's what 'ls --help' is for.

When you can see it, make a symlink to it (a shortcut), so that you can see it even if you don't have hidden files showing. Then you can just follow the symlink to the folder.

However, I usually find it better for me to move the fake_windows directory somewhere else that is not hidden, and then change ~/.wine/config to point to my C drive as being in the new location.

That ought to get you started; let us know how far you get with that, and we'll go on.

You could use mPlayer, or Totem, or Juk, or any number of other native programs than XMMS you know, and not have to deal with this.... but of course it's your choice.

how do i get to this adress in the CLI?

/home/ray/.wine/c/Program Files/Winamp

i can get as deep as /home/ray/.wine/c

but cant get to Program Files as that space give the CLI fits.

this also means i cant get to winamp.exe with or without the wine in front of the command....

FYI the install seemed to of worked flawlessly, i just cant seem to figure out how to get there.

You can either:

1) quote the path, ~/.wine/"Program Files"/Winamp

2) use an escape character to generate the space, ~/.wine/Program\ Files/Winamp

3) use the Wine path and quotes, wine "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe"

Hope this helps.
