Need software/library suggestions for graphics

I am trying to display some simple 2D graphics without the use of Xorg, from just a text-based program. I am trying to build a very simple user interface that will be made for the sole purpose of displaying some text and pictures in a user-friendly way.
Is there a program or some sort of C library that i can use to accomplish this? Also, can a program like this be run on multiple Linux distributions? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, to get the text portion to work, I suggest using a parser lib like slang. As for the pictures, there's either SVGAlib or SDL. As for doing both at once, I would say SDL would be a good choice. Now, if you'd like to go big, you could use the console mode of the Qt lib. All of these will work on just about anything except SVGAlib, which is getting a little long in the tooth.

Not sure what you want, but it maybe worth considering Python and Pygame module. Simple graphics can be achieved easily, but may not be a low enough programming level for you. Not sure how good it would be for a user interface.

e.g. This is a link showing how to create a screen and display text, at different sizes.

Hendronicus, these sound like what I have been looking for. I'll try them out.
tur third, I think Python is too high-level for this project because I need to display graphics in a text-based program.
Thank you for you responses!
