need program to output vidcaps (can mplayer do it?)

I am in the process of making a program/script that is indexing my dvd's and cd's. Normal features such as adding comments and genres to files is no problem implementing. But i also want it to be able to add information automatically about each file. Specifically I want vidcaps/still pictures from media-files.

I would prefer if mplayer have this ability. But I haven't found it in the manual. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I simply need a program that outputs a set of pictures given a video-file and some options.

You can use mplayer with the -vo jpeg option. See the documentation for more details, or more output formats such as -vo png.

The mplayer -vo jpeg <file> works well. Almost too well:-) It outputs the entire video as jpg-pictures. The -sstep displays one frame every <sec> seconds.

"Useful for slideshows. Since MPlayer can only seek to the next keyframe this may be inexact. Most formats have one keyframe every <sec> and <sec>+20 seconds."

There is no output since apparantly the keyframe is inexact. Does anyone have a solution for this?
