Question Need help with Bind (DNS)

I need any advice/help with trying to diagnose a Bind issue
on CentOS 4.7 x64 running bind-9.2.4-30.el4.

The service will stop working, however when the command
service named status is issued it will say it is running.

The service fails to restart when the command is issued and
a reboot of the server is the only way to get the service
running successfully again.

I have never ran across this type of issue and I am at
a loss to know why it is doing this. If I use the named-checkconf /etc/named.conf or service named configtest it does not report
errors.

After a reboot the service works fine and as intended,
if I try to restart the service on the server it will
say 'failed it is already running'???

If a zone file is not correct would it cause erratic
behavior or could it cause it to behave this way?

It started happening a few weeks ago, up till then it
was up and running without any issues?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anything showing up in the named log? You have logging turned on?

Do I need to have a separate log for named?

Right now it is writing out in /var/log/messages - however I do not see any strange errors.

What is bizarre is how the process says it is running, however when I try to restart the service it fails and it takes a reboot to get it working again.

I am at a loss because I have never seen this type of behavior, could a zone file cause this type of issue? I do not see how it could be a bug since it has not been updated or modified.

If I remember correctly there is a way to turn on the named logging through the command line.

Any advice would be great!

Dear
check /var/named/named.run(or /var/named/data/named.run), it will show you relevant information. I that information is not useful. stop your named service(service named stop) and start bind in higher debug level
#named -d 3
now check named.run

Thanks

I don't think zone file can cause this issue.

I will do this in a downtime window, I will do the other
checks as well.

Exclamation dmesg this may be cause?

Copyright (c) 1999-2007 LSI Corporation
Fusion MPT misc device (ioctl) driver 3.12.19.00rh
mptctl: Registered with Fusion MPT base driver
mptctl: /dev/mptctl @ (major,minor=10,220)
warning: many lost ticks.
Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts
rip default_idle+0x20/0x23

Would this cause the bind issue???

I went back to an older kernel and inserted this in the
/boot/grub/grub.conf

clock=pmtmr

So far it looks 'ok' however I need to let it run for a while.
