As some give very detailed responses and others just try to push you in the right direction is going to happen on any forum. Most members here come here on their own free time to help others, so I think any advice should be appreciated in the utmost respect, just think, at least you did get a reply.

This forum here is probably one of the most sympathetic and patient when answering newbie questions you'll find out there, but good luck though..

Thanks everyone...

I had the same initial error message as Lyonic.

I have followed the suggestion of acid_kewpie and installed an rpm of the gtk-devel package.

I followed the installation instructions for gtk-gnutella in the INSTALL file with the exception that I did a "gmake" and "gmake install" rather than "make" etc.

This worked out absolutely fine and I am now off to find some nice tunes to download.

If it helps anyone else with a similar problem I am using Red Hat 8.0. I am not certain but I do not think the gtk-devel stuff comes on the standard discs....

Anyway, thanks again. I am a complete Linux Newbie and think I will agree with trickykid that this forum is one of the least techie I have found (if you are prepared to come down to my level of knowledge to explain something it is the evolutionary equivalent of crawling back into the slime pond!)

Cheers.
