Need help to get scanning working

I need help finding a scanning program that will work with my computer.

I have tried a few programs:
xsane - doesn't always find scanner.
gscan2pdf - the image looks ok when scanned, but the saved image is corrupted.
xscanimage - image looks ok - save image with Imagemagick (display) to a pdf - when printed the file is smaller than it should be. I chose letter size.

I hope someone can help to resolve this.

I am using CrunchBang Waldorf at present.

Thanks
