need help splitting a directory ..

hi

I want to split a directory in to two sub directories

If my home dir is 1000 Mb I cant write it completely on one cd

So iwant to split it in to two directories namely

1) naren.bak.1
2)naren.bak.2

so that my /home/naren directory will be split in to two temporary

directories ..

so that i can write the images of thus formed on two

cdroms ..

and afterwards i also need help how do i combine them again...

so that after copying two backup directories

naren.bak.1 and naren.bak.2 in to

from seperate cdroms /tmp directory I want to combine this

two to make it again one directory say "naren"

How do i do this

any ideas

sry for the long thread

Thanks for reading...

I don't know how to do it that way but have you thought about compressing them with tar? Depending on what files you have it might fit on one CD

Of course you may know how to do it exactly though I don't know how to do it. I just gave you an alternative you might have overseen. BTW some compressing programs have options to split the compressed files

Why don't you create two subdirecotroies which are links to directories on onther disks. Let's say you have a /tmp on hda1 and /tmp2 on /hda2. You might do ln -s (create a soft link) /dev/hda1/tmp name1 and ln -s /dev/hda2/tmp2 name2. If you did a mv [a-l]* name1 mv [m-z]* name2 all files between a and l inclusively would be moved to name1 which is really /dev/hda1/tmp. Remember a-l does not include A-L.

not sure if you're talking about directories or files

for files, you can use the "split" command to break them up however you like

for dirs, unless I'm missing something, why not just burn the first 700Mb worth of files on the first CD, then the remainder on another CD?
