Need help setting Alsamixer

This is my sound card:
Ensoniq AudioPCI, ES1371
Sound card has a sound out and a line in and a mike in

These are the devices on alsamixer:
Quote:
Playback:
Master, Master M, 3D Contr, 3D Contr, PCM, Line, CD, Mic,
Mic Boos, Mic Sele, Video, phone, PC Speak, Aux,
Mono Out(mic or mix), External amplifier, Sigmatel, Sigmatel
sigmatel = Sigmatel 4-Speaker Stereo
sigmatel = Sigmatel Surround Phase Inversion Playback

Capture:
3D Contr, Line, CD, Mic, Video, Phone, Aux, Capture, Mix, Mix Mono
I have been searching for a tutorial for using the Alsamixer,
I went to: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page
but am not finding what I need.

I don't have experience with mixers and I would like to find something that
would explain what devices/channels are for and what settings to use for
playback and recording.

find /proc/asound/ -iname '*' | while read LINE; do echo "##### " $LINE; sleep 1; cat $LINE | more; done

There's additional information describing your devices options and abilities located in /proc/asound/.

also amixer and other scripts.

Is there anything specific you're looking for? Like an .asoundrc example? /etc/modprobe.d/ configuration? Or just a general understanding of what you can / cannot do?

$ amixer | more

$ speakertest -c 2
(stop with ^C)

And more...

yes, mostly general information. I would like to understand alsamixer, and know what I am able to do with it.

Are the channels general or are they related to my sound card specifically?

Thanks.

It should be your card specifically. It's not going to work for stuff that doesn't exist.

alsamixer -c 0
(change the number if you have multiple soundcards)

<tab> to select between <playback> <capture> <all>
<M> to mute/unmute (or was it <ENTER>?)
<cursor up/down> to adjust levels
<cursor left/right> to jump between available channels
<F1> brings up the help screen
<ESC> exits the help screen, or alsamixer
