Need help reviving ProFTPd

I have a slight problem. I've recently reinstalled my Mandrake 9 server, and found that I could not use the FTP service I installed.

Code:
> /etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd status
proftpd dead but subsys locked
That confirms what I get when I try to connect to my box.
ProFTPd is set to start at boot, this seems to work OK.

Code:
> /etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd restart
Shutting down proftpd: [FAILED]
Starting proftpd: [  OK  ]
Doesn't appear to work properly, and contains mangled characters. (this is through Webmin's Command Shell feature, so I guess the bad characters could be expected)

Can anyone help me revive ProFTPd? I'm ready to just reinstall the box completely, as I suspect I made a mistake by letting Xinetd handle ProFTPd, something I haven't used before. (And I never had trouble before. why did I do that then? curiosity I suppose.)

Never mind lads, I just finished reinstalling the server and everything now works fine. ;)
