ok, so i was having a lot of problems and ebded up having to install the newest glib, atk and everything else at that site, they went through without a problem, and i assumed that i had installed GTK+ correctly, whatever the newest version was, 2.2.0? Anyway, if it makes a difference, everything was untarred in /home/mind and then i went through the install process from there without specifying anything different so i guess they are installed to whereever the default directories are.
Anyway, if you can help id appreciate it, if not, ill live
It seems as though your install of GTK didn't go as smoothly as you thought. If you're sure you installed GTK without any errors, it's possible that it isn't where the gaim install scripts think it should be. Since you're planning on reinstalling Slackware tomorrow, rather than troubleshoot this problem focus on what you can do to keep it from happening.
Since you're new to linux, the best thing you can do is use Slackware packages when you install applications. Everything you installed this evening is in the slackware packages repository. The official version is here http://slackware.com/pb/ but it's always s-l-o-w. I look here http://slackware.com/getslack/ and use a local mirror of the package database. Once you've downloaded a package, open a terminal and su - to root, cd to the directory where you saved the package, and run the pkgtool command. It opens an interface that's really easy to use to manage installed software.
I'm having the EXACT same problem. I installed atk, glib, pango, and gtk+ 2.2.0 without any errors in Slackware 8.1.
I go to install gaim .74 and I'm getting the exact same error. when I ./configured all the above packages, I did it with --prefix=/usr. I got no errors on any of them when I used the prefix. Now, with Gaim .74, I get the same error you are. I've looked for the gtk+ 2.2.0 development headers and can't find them anywhere so hopefully I'll get this sorted out. Any help is much appreciated.
