Need help installing a .rpm in home directory
 

I'm using linux on a university machine and hence I don't have root access. I used to regularly use this application called gnome-do to open programs, search files and create notes but after the system was updated it was uninstalled. I like to use this program a lot and the administrator won't re-install it.

How do I install gnome-do in my home directory? I'm using opensuse 11.3 64-bit. I found the rpm and src.rpm on this website but can't figure out what to do.

You won't be able to install an RPM anywhere else other that what it is programmed to do. Unless of course, you unpack it, rework it, and repack it. It's easier for you to get the source code for the program, and compile it yourself into your home directory.

Get the source code, and read the README file for instructions.

You need to have root privileges to install a RPM in Suse. This is something you will have to ask your systems administrator to do. There may be a reason that the admin doesn't want this program running but the only way to find out is to ask.

Not unless root wants to...

Try to ask the system administrator to install the "gnome-do" package and to limit the permission for "gnome-do" to one user, yourself.

You may have to engage in some social engineering while asking for a particular favor, but you can mention that if root will take the trouble, one user won't burden the system that much.

However, root may not wish to install the packages needed to run a gnome package on the system if he has it set up for another desktop.
