Need help getting rid of old libraries

I am running gentoo and somehow have got an older copy of libxml2 (2.6.26) floating around on my system some where and it is keeping me from updating parts of my system. My installed version is 2.6.28 but a configure script keeps finding the old version. How do I find and get rid of this library.

I have another problem with ps also. here is its output
Code:
semget: No such file or directory
semop: Invalid argument
[DEVICE -1] The requested IPC message queue is locked.

I think that this is part of the same problem, considering they showed up following the first failed update but I'm not sure. The main library thats failing to update is libxslt. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Can't be positive this will fix anything but I'd do a:

Code:
emerge -av gentoolkit
emerge --update --newuse --deep world
etc-update
emerge --depclean
revdep-rebuild
(and possibly a reboot).

If you're getting errors with any of the above steps, please detail them (i.e. post them). Also check the Gentoo bugtracker.

my errors are coming up in revdep-rebuild while attempting to rebuild libxslt

but here is the last of a revdep-rebuild and also showing what libxml2 is installed
Code:
Crypto extensions will be available.

Enabling debugger
checking for libxml libraries >= 2.6.27... configure: error: Version 2.6.26 found. You need at least libxml2 2.6.27 for this version of libxslt

icedown@galaxy ~ # emerge -pv libxml2

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

No idea. Did you check the Gentoo website for related bugs? Also, I couldn't help that noticing that .. libxml2-2.6.28 is ~x86. How did you get to have the unstable version of libxml2?

I don't think that it is a gentoo bug. I have a large program off of another system that i just copied over because I can't compile it, it requires a f90 compiler such as the PGI one. I think it has something to do with that, but I have no idea how to go about finding stray library files. Is there any way to find out which file(s) that the configure is looking at to determine it? it's really got my whole system screwed up.

And as far as the unstable version, I run the full unstable (~x86) branch. I am not having problems like this on either of my other systems running the same branch.
