If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
during execution
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
during linking
- use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
- have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

I'm trying to install gtkSpell3, which I downloaded from the CVS. I already installed enchant-1.3.0 which didn't cause any problems (it's required for gtkSpell3). Since I hate seeing questions without answers, here's how I solved the problem that you're having and the one that you may have after you get the newer version of gtkdocs.

I believe that your problem is that you're using version 1.6 of gtkdocs. I was able to get past this by installing gtkdocs 1.7, which I got from http://www.gtk.org/gtk-doc/download.html

That fixed the problem with make, and I thought all was right in the world for once, but then make install failed with this:

Code:
[cliped messages above...]
Making install in po
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/red/temp_dl/temppp/gtkspell3/po'
if test -r ".././mkinstalldirs"; then \
  .././mkinstalldirs /usr/share; \
else \
  /bin/sh ../mkinstalldirs /usr/share; \
fi
/bin/sh: ../mkinstalldirs: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [install-data-yes] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/red/temp_dl/temppp/gtkspell3/po'
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
I took a quick look at ./po/Makefile, but I'm not exactly sure what it's trying to do. There aren't any files inside the gtkspell3 directory named mkinstalldirs, and which mkinstalldirs doesn't return anything, so I'm guessing that's the problem; but I'm just not sure where I should get this, or why it wasn't included from the CVS download. At any rate, I found a copy of this floating around on the net here: http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/...lldirs?rev=1.4

This script apparently just creates a bunch of directories, so I put it in the source root dir (/home/red/temp_dl/temppp/gtkspell3 in my case), and that fixed the problem.

I'm going to try to tell the gtkSpell maintainers about this missing file, but it's been my experience that contacting package mantainers produces litte results :-( I hate to make a comment like that about the OS community, but it's what I've seen thus far. I think better docs that would answer stupid questions along with a way to force people to look at the FAQ first would help the maintainers from having to deal with a bunch of problems not related to the project (i.e. dependencies, user error, etc.)... but what do I know? I'm just a programmer :-P Maybe the gtk crew will be the ones who make me change my tune, who knows.

Good luck, and I hope this helps some people in the future.
