Need help changing screen refresh rate

Hello,

I've ran into a little cosmetic problem with my server box running Mandrake 9.

Problem: my box is displaying X on a Compaq S710 monitor @ 1024x768, 32Bit color, at 85hz refresh rate.
Symptoms: Without X, everything looks fine on the console. But with X, the screen shrinks about a full inch and is also shifted to the right a whole inch.

The thing is, that this monitor has an issue with being set to 85hz refresh rates combined with a 1024x768 resolution. although supported hardware wise.. it's crap like that. 75hz is the value that works with this resolution without warping the image as described.
Could somebody help me figure out how to set it to 75hz so it will display correctly?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to dig into the XF86Config-4 file when I get home, and let http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl do it's work on a new modeline. perhaps that'll work...
cp XF86Config-4 XF86Config-4.bak before I start ofcourse.

Nope. didn't help. whatever modeline I calculate there, the display doesn't change one bit and stays shrunk and shifted to the right.
I guess i'm stuck like this with only 85% of my screen area used.

I know this is late but I am surprised no one even replied.

There are buttons on the front of the monitor that give you a menu to change the settings.

The far right button brings up the menu. Use the middle two buttons to move in the menu until you find the horizontal move, hit the far right button, then use the middle ones until the screen is centered horizontally. Repeat with the vertical, then increase horizontal and vertical until the screen fills the monitor. You will probably have to readjust center to get it right.

Thanks for the reply pjb,

However the controls you mention do not solve the real problem; it was (was, as the server died recently) a dual computer setup. I think I had another thread on this, guess I got them mixed up somehow. Had I changed the monitor's settings for the server, I would have to undo it all again to be able to use my desktop. But it's no worry anymore, I have replaced the Compaq with a 19" TFT screen, which does not pose this problem for me. Big plus is, I can now see all colors again too
