need gimp install how 2's

i just recently downloaded gimp and i have no idea on how to run or install it since in a n00b 2 linux.
can some1 tell me plzz da steps to install and run gimp after i have untared it.

generic instructions are:
./configure
make
(as root) make install

You will certainly want to read the README and INSTALL files in the top level of the gimp source for detailed instructions.

The gimp is usually installed by default by (almost) all linux distro's (including redhat), try typing 'gimp' (without the quotes) on the command line when in X.
