I've had success with the Linuxant drivers available at Linuxant.com . They are not free, but they work like a champ on kernels up to (but not including) 2.6.11, for me, anyway.
Of course it sucks paying once for the modem and once for the drivers. You can vent your displeasure by emailing conexant and informing them that this is the last of their modems that you will buy. Then buy a modem with a lucent chipset instead.
