Need C++ Guru Help

Hey everyone, or whoever!
For starters just want to let you know that I'm really just a 46 yr. old "b00b of a n00b" at any type of programming. I have been messing with Linux now for a few years and recently have gotten into the *BSD mode. I'm currently the "Family Admin," I guess you could call it! Dad why is this doing this, or why is the computer locking up!@ (Windoze of course!) My son will soon be starting his sophmore year in college and will be taking a required course, for his engineering degree that is C++ programming. I know that he will be learning this in a "WindoZe" environment, Please don't get me wrong , I'm not bashing WindoZe here! lol!, because , "Hey What Can I Say"! that's just the way it is! I plan to share his learning experience with him and would like to help him learn it in a "Linux" or "Unix" environment! Personnally I don't use WindoZe any more myself but my family still does, you all know the typical "Why use anything but Windoze attitude" although my kids have learned to log out of my Linux and *BSD os's on my other computers. or else be burned at the stake for not logging out correctly! They have learned to surf the net in Linux! blah, blah!

Please give me links and programs to teach and learn C++ in a Linux and *BSD world!

You people Rock! and I enjoy your talent and your wisdom!
Even though most of you are young enough to be my kid!

You guy's Rule!!!!

Well, I'm no guru, but I could make a few small suggestions:

I like nedit for writing code because it is fairly simple and has a nice highlight mode (coloured syntax for a range of languages). There are also a number of IDEs available if that's your preference.

You've got a great C++ compiler available to you (g++). there's a basic g++ tutorial at: http://www.cs.wm.edu/cspages/computi...orial/gpp.html

Search the web for some C++ tutorials (there are heaps)

Start off with those, throw in some coursework and maybe a book or two.

Once your confidence is up - check out the source code for some GNU programs. (Perhaps you could go to http://freshmeat.net and use the filters there to display only the projects written in C++) Eventually you could contribute to some of these programs - the ultimate learning exercise!
