need backup program for ide tape drive

seagate travan atapi 40gb
currently i am moding the drive to act like a scsi device /dev/st0
then running dump
i haven't been able to get the dumpdates file to update and i can't really tell the status of the tape, like how much free space is there. when i try to use compression with dump it errors out, something about block size.
is there another program that gives more information, or at least a program that will give me a detailed status on my drive?
should i not mod it to a scsi?
