Need a good audio editing program

Hey guys I just need to edit some music, very basic stuff, just cutting parts out of tracks and whatnot. What's a good program to use for this?

I downloaded audacious, but I can't get it installed cause it needs wxWidgets 2.4 which I just installed and linked it to yet it's complaining it's not there. I'm sure I could get this to work (I gave up immediately) and 90% chance it's my fault, but I'm going to blame the program just cause it relies on an older version; I'm assuming it must be badly designed to begin with.

Not audacity then... how about GNU-Sound?

It suddenly occurred to me you may prefer a KDE app.

Linux Journal has a roundup of the sound editors...

... they all want gtk for some reason - but KWave?

I can't use a kde based app, I don't have kde or any of the libs installed for it. I'm running slackware with only xfce installed. If audacious is really a good program then I'll just get that to work, I really don't have anything against it, I was just kind of frustrated at it at the time.

I was just looking for recommendations as I've never used any audio editing software so I don't even know what kind of features one might have, I'm sure I won't be using them, at least for now but I normally like to just install one program that is the best at what it does, problem is I just don't know what it's supposed to do lol.

edit: I gotta leave now, but thanks for the recommendations, I'll check those out when I get back to the house.
