ncmpcpp not playing music, stays paused

Hi, all. I am having a problem getting ncmpcpp to play a song. When I hit return to start the song it goes to pause instead of play. It briefly says "play" then goes to pause. I'm using this software:

Fedora 18, 64 bit.
I'm wondering what ncmpcpp uses to play music. Is it sox, mplayer, mpg123 - what?
Thanks ahead of time.
