Is there some way to give Nautilus a usable split-pane view? I realize there are other file managers that are designed from the ground up this way, but none I found seemed very refined.
I think I got it on browser mode, but I don't have split pane. There is option to show a side panel that has a tree view, but it doesn't seem good for moving files around or creating symlinks. Am I looking in the wrong place?
You're in the right place. You certainly can use the side pane in tree view to drag and drop files/folders and create symlinks.
In the side pane in tree view, you can expand the tree to any location. Click on a folder and the main panel moves there. Select a file, and drop it in a location in the side panel to move it.
Right click on a file to create a symlink. Drag and drop it in the tree to relocate it.
