Nautilus, split pane?

Is there some way to give Nautilus a usable split-pane view? I realize there are other file managers that are designed from the ground up this way, but none I found seemed very refined.

You can open Nautilus windows in "browser" mode by right-clicking and selecting "Browse Folder".

I think I got it on browser mode, but I don't have split pane. There is option to show a side panel that has a tree view, but it doesn't seem good for moving files around or creating symlinks. Am I looking in the wrong place?

There are other applications that will do that. gentoo, for example (not the distribution, the application), or Krusader.

You're in the right place. You certainly can use the side pane in tree view to drag and drop files/folders and create symlinks.

In the side pane in tree view, you can expand the tree to any location. Click on a folder and the main panel moves there. Select a file, and drop it in a location in the side panel to move it.

Right click on a file to create a symlink. Drag and drop it in the tree to relocate it.

Another one is gnome-commander.
