Native x86_64 Assembler for GNU/Linux?

I would like to write some assembly for x86_64, but have the following problem:

Whenever I've written assembly for college, it has been on an emulator, emulating an antiquated operating system. For example, the 8085 and MIPS32.

So my question is:
Is there a native assembler for x86_64 on GNU/Linux, and where do I find information about how to use it, how it interfaces with the OS, etc., etc.?
