NAS-like Software

I just finishing setting up and playing with FreeNAS and I love it! The problem is now I've decided I'd rather not have a dedicated machine for my networked attached storage. I already have a linux box I use for web development (running Apache, MySQL & PHP) and figured I could simply put the 500GB hard drive in this box and share it. But I love how FreeNAS worked especially with that sweet web front-end.

Is there a program or set of programs out there that will allow me to run a non-standalone NAS server with a web front end like FreeNAS???

TIA

Obviously this post is a bit old, but for the sake of future visitors:

With most out-of-the-box distro's, the easiest way to do this would be by just using a SAMBA server.

If you want the web interface, Webmin provides web-based administration of almost all aspects of a system (I administered a system from 400 miles away for 3 months using only Webmin and an SSH terminal window) including Samba server and shares.

I'm sure that there are some other web-based Samba interfaces. SWAT comes to mind, I believe that is the name. Do a search for SAMBA web configuration.

This is all, of course, assuming that Samba is the system you want to use.

SuSE has most servies preinstalled and all of them can be configured through the YAST setup tool, either locally (via GUI) or in a menu-based console version.

thanks for the reply.

Samba is the system I went with and I just shared folders using Ubuntu's Share Folders panel. I thought about Webmin and SWAT, but didn't feel like going through the hassle of installing and configuring them. Ubuntu's built-in sharing panel did the job just fine.

thanks again
