n00b in need of some advice on 64-bit linux distros and networking

hey guys. i'm building up a new computer for myself and networking my house that has 10 computers running on a business dsl line.

there's 9 of us with a new media computer hooked up to a tv in the living room. my goal is to have the media computer be a backup for everyone's music, movies, and tv shows, accessible for everyone to watch and listen to in the community space downstairs.

the network is mainly in place. we have 1 person running OSX, and currently 8 on XP. i'm thinking of switching to linux, and making the media comp a linux box as well.

my new computer is an AMD64, and i'd like to take advantage of that with possibly a dual partition on mine running XP and linux, or just one or the other.

i'd like to make the drive on the media computer a shared HD on the house network.

any suggestions on a n00b friendly 64-bit linux distribution?

Ubuntu is a friendly Debian based distribution with a very active and helpful user community. It does have a text based installer but it shouldn't scare anyone because it is very straightforward.
