MythTV - can't scan for channels

Hi

I'm having problems getting MythTV to work. My setup is:
  • Fedora Core 4
  • Creative Soundblaster Audigy sound card
  • ATI 9200SE graphics card
  • WinTV PVR 150 tv-capture/tuner card (retail boxed version, bought this year)
  • ivtv drivers version 0.3.3k (from the development branch, as the PVR 150 isn't supported by the stable branch)
  • I'm in the UK so my tv signals are PAL (i.e. not NTSC or SECAM)

Using a combination of the instructions here and here I've managed to get to a point where I can get Linux to see the card and to get some sort of picture off it. At the moment, I get only white noise (static), I think because it's not tuned. Also, I get no sound. I'm fairly sure the card is working as all the init stuff in dmesg and /var/log/messages seems fine - ivtv correctly detects the right tuner type, the fact that it's PAL, etc, and lspci -v correctly identifies the card.

Following the Myth instructions on the second link I mentioned above, I got myth working, and it can see the video card, but I can't figure out how to get it to scan for channels. I've run all the way through the mythtvsetup program and got the channels listed that I want, but the scan for channels button in part 5 of the setup seems to be disabled.

I tried changing channels and inputs manually using

Code:
ivtv -r
but it didn't seem to do much, and I'm not entirely sure what number to put as the argument anyway. Some posts I've read mention that it should be the frequency x 16, but this didn't obviously seem to work.

I did once get a picture out of it in Linux - after I had been using it under Windows (which is on the other hard disk), I think it didn't de-tune from the last channel I was watching and I was able to watch that channel (minus sound) under Linux, but I wasn't able to change channel, and when I ran

Code:
ivtv -R
to find out where it was tuned to, it told me it was tuned to frequency 0, which I didn't entirely believe. I know the channel numbers I need to tune to from the settings I have set up under Windows.

To summarise, I need advice on:
  • How to get myth to scan for channels, or how to configure it with the channel numbers/frequencies manually
  • How to get sound working

Sorry for the long post - I'd be grateful for any advice/ideas anyone can offer.

sorry not a solution, but same problem here.
mine is a bttv card and myth seems unable to communicate with the tuner, can't change channels but can see the video. I can use tvtime to scan for or watch channels but mythtv-setup scan button is not available. The card is quite old, a wintv primo? maybe not sure, has only tv no radio. Any help is appreciated

I had a shot at setting up mythtv this morning with my old wintv go card and ran into exactly the same problem

I'm not 100% sure if this is the solution to your problems but I think that usually means that your channel database isn't set up properly. I think mythfilldatabase can usually help solve this. If it doesn't work as a regular user, try it as root -- it may be a permissions issue.

Also, try checking the permissions on /dev/video0 (assuming that's where your card is). You current user (or, better yet, a group that user is in) should have read/write access to that device (you need write permissions to change channels).

Hope that helps.
