Mysterious Read Only problem. ReiserFS.

Hi all...

Searched, and found nothing that looks like this...

We have a Dell server (Dual Xeon, 3x36Gb Raid5 on LSI controller (w. Dell bios of course)) running one of our websites. It's running SleS9 with all updates and kernel 2.4.21 as supplied by SuSE... Last night it apparently did something - but nothing is to be found in various log files. At some point it must've rebooted and everything comes up with a read only filesystem, which means nothing comes up. So I booted it again - and the same thing happens. Everything is mounted read only upon boot, so of course there's nothing to see in neither messages nor boot.msg.. reiserfsck assures me the filesystem is clean. So I remounted the / filesystem to read/write, that worked. reiserfsck still reports a clean filesystem. So I switched to runlevel 1 - reiserfsck still thinks nothing is wrong. So I tried to switch to runlevel 3 - and HEY - everything comes up bar the ssh deamon. MySQL, Apache, everything works according to plan. So I made a nice reboot - and the trouble starts all over. Still mounts everything read only and I have to do the remount with r/w, init 1, init 3 procedure..

I'm extremely flabbergasted as to what has happened....

Well - everything is running at the moment - minus sshd - but the ssdh works - I tried starting it with /usr/sbin/sshd -d -d and I'm able to connect. But starting it from /etc/init.d just doesn't work....

Cheers - and Thanks for listening

I would check my fstab, and also, since you seem to have issues with going mutiluser, I would ensure that /etc/rc.d/rc.3 isn't corrupted, or changed.....
Check the date on it - ls -a - and see when it was last modified. If this is a webserver, you may have been compromised. I assume you are running Apache, and you are also using a vunerable kernel, unless you have patched both it and Apache.....

fstab is ok, as is rc3.d - have checked and re-checked S09sshd - and I can't find anything that is out of the ordinary. And as said, manually starting sshd works, I've generated new keys etc. Nothing works when starting sshd from init.d and down.

As for going to multiuser mode, If I do the remount r/w, init 1, init 3 procedure, it has no problems going to multiuser mode. There's no evidence of an attack anywhere. Nothing in the logs on the server, and nothing in the log on the Firewall (Sonicwall 4060)..

As said, every patch from SuSE Maintenance is installed so I think both the kernel and the Apache are (more or less) up to date...

I'm getting very very confused....

Init is corrupted?
I dunno.
Fsck tells you it's clean, then apparently it is.
So, a bad crash is out.
You say that init.d runs until the ssh line, and quits?
Post it here, would you? (your init.d, I mean)
