mysqld: unrecognized option `--skip-external-locking'

Installed mysqld via APT on my debian system, it won't start!

I don't know what's with the --skip-external-locking, mysqld isn't a shell file calling the real mysqld and passing that option... any hints?

industry:~# mysqld | head
Code:
mysqld: unrecognized option `--skip-external-locking'
mysqld Ver 3.23.49 for pc-linux-gnu on i686

Usage: mysqld [OPTIONS]

--ansi Use ANSI SQL syntax instead of MySQL syntax
-b, --basedir=path Path to installation directory. All paths are
