Mysql update in debian, DONT RESTART!"

Hi!
i just update debian to the new mysql version and it doesnt restart anymore. when i tri mysqld command whit --safe-mode parameter or any other, it says
server:/# mysqld
mysqld: unrecognized option `--skip-external-locking'

it seems like the `--skip-external-locking' is used by default, but it doesnt recognize it.
anyone knows what is happening?

thanx for advanced!..

So what does /etc/init.d/mysql restart do? That is supposedly the "correct" way of restarting the mysql service on Debian.
